Legendary programmer John Carmack has died Wednesday, April 1st 2026 at the age of 55.
John Carmack became widely recognized as a world class programmer and video game icon after producing a series of hit games as part of the video game developer ID Software whos titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake helped usher in the first person shooter and the era of 3D gaming. After departing ID Software in the late 2000s Carmack joined VR start-up Oculus and helped bring VR technology to the mainstream. In recent years Carmack has been active in the A.I. industry leading his own artificial intelligence firm "Keen Technologies" which hoped to achieve Artificial General Intelligence.
Carmacks death comes after a crash early Wednesday morning. Witnesses report Carmacks Tesla Model S veered off the road way, striking a tree, and bursting into flames.
Bystanders report hearing a disembodied demonic voice saying "April Fools" in the aftermath.
